2013: A Review

My Goals were pretty simple for the coming year.

1. Blog About It : 200 posts by December 31 CHECK (October)

2. New Most Wanted: PUSH  This has been a work in progress as I do not have many demanding needs in terms of cardboard.  I would guess the Nothing But Tigers collection would have consumed most of my want list this past year.  I was hoping for more Trammell.  I began adding an auto or relic once a month.  Then I shifted to keep my auto collection to 1% of my collection, so 6,000 Tigers... 60 Tiger Autos and I got pretty close, but this can be pricey.  So this needs to be more concrete

3. Attend the National... too much going on this summer, maybe next year in Cleveland....FAIL

4. More Tigers - Hit 6,000 by August, CHECK (June), what a help from people out there just sending me stuff to some great trade partners acquired.

5. Binder Up! -  I have added two binders of players I enjoyed and has branched out to Tigers that played for other teams. CHECK

6. Football? - football still here, nobody wants my junk, although the football archives has tempted me to rip a few packs.....FAIL

7. A PWE A Week?  I am sure I have sent out more than 52 envelopes this year....CHECK

2014 will be a great year, looking forward to a great year of collecting!

Goodbye Tigers

Goodbye 2013 and what might have been.

Goodbye Prince Fielder, curse you for your belly flop in the ALCS, under performing, and spurning the Tigers with your new number of 84....

Goodbye Joaquin Benoit, if you could only maintain your regular season strength into the last two post season's.....

Goodbye Peralta, you cheating Cardinal bastard....

Goodbye Infante, turning two for the reigning "NEXT BIG THING" KC Royals, ten years running.

Goodbye role players Pena, Santiago, Tuiasosopo, Downs, Veras

ReCount: 7,649

Did you ever see Mr 3,000?

The whole gig is Bernie Mac had 3,000 hits, allegedly, upon a recount, he was somewhat short and returns the bigs to hit the immortal hit threshold.  It's worth a rainy Saturday afternoon.
Cards featured are more highlights from Johnny's Trading Spot

How it relates to the Hot Corner, is that my database deceived me, I was using an inflated number for my Tigers on the Wall, I was about 100 shy, I had some dupes in there, counting my flagship sets and teams set twice.

So here we are on the edge of 2013, tipping in to 2014 and we're sitting on 7,649 Tigers on the Wall.

The unofficial blog team standings

14kPhillies ....Phillies......... 16,000+
Night Owl ....Dodgers........Too Many to Count
Wrigley Wax ...Cubs..........11.947
Hot Corner...Tigers..... 7, 649

I am sure I forgot someone ahead of me.

This collecting year I was able to double my collection fairly easily, now it's getting tough to keep up with that early pace.  We'll see if I crack 10,000 by the end of 2014 (surely chasing parallel sets helps)

Here is a recap of December/November -

Clubhouse Connection

Mr Kaz of New Hampshire proper sent me a Christmas Eve package of Tigers, let's take a look.

First out of the box, Mr. Met Kaz gets Ty Cobb #501 in the Nothing But Tigers binder.

Others that made it in the NBT binder

Some that would fit in nice w/ NBT but I don't own them yet, so they go in the regular Tigers collection

#531 Orlando Miller, need 1 more!

Another assortment of Tigers I now own

I do not know what is worse here, the scan or 2013 Valverde's season...

Thank you, good sir, Mr. Kaz, best wishes on the birth of your first child!

Bravo!

Johnny from the Trading Spot  and southern sports fan (Braves, Buccaneers, Falcons, John Elway?) sent me an awesome collection of Tigers.  First, he sent me some really great cardboard and second he sent some items that will help out on the Nothing But Tigers.

The first group I am going to share helps out my 2001 Topps Archives

These are such a nice surprise, as I am a sucker for archives type cards.

Thank you Johnny, there will be more to blog about!

Risk - Reward

In my area the power has effected thousands of people, my family only had to go without cable & internet since Monday morning and a brief power outage on Christmas Eve.

In need of some entertainment I eyed  a 1985 cello rack pack just waiting for a snowy day.

Should I open it?  Was it more valuable unopened?

This rookie card was already facing outward...

(Thinking....) Yup, let's open it.

So we have the Gooden, it has a weird ding in the middle, *sigh*.

Immediately following the Gooden, another rookie card....

This one in really good shape!

and finally, one I have been chasing for the Nothing But Tigers set #792.

In this case the risk was worth the reward.
